This specimen was lot 11232 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1795-JJ 8 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos IV (1788-1808). MS-62 (PCGS). Extremely lustrous and very attractive, with light yellow gold surfaces showing hints of pale green. Frosty all over, problem free but for a couple trivial marks in the right obverse field. A particularly choice example. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Spink America's sale of the Norweb Collection, March 1997, lot 501." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1774-1808.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Restrepo M97.12, Fr-51; KM-62.1.
