This specimen was lot 23407 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IV 8 Escudos 1793 NR-JJ, Bogota mint, MS63 PCGS. Lustrous, with green-gold patina and a hint of rubbing on the high points." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogota) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Overdates abound. Nuevo Reino (Bogota) and its neighbor Popayan were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-51, KM 62.1.
