Colombia SB818-40025r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40025 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1778-SF Escudo. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-53 (PCGS). Flashes of luster surround the light yellow gold obverse and cover the deeply toned violet and rose reverse. Some minor hairlines are seen, but the overall strike and visual appeal are very nice. A handsome piece. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 721." This type was struck at Popayan and Nuevo Reino 1772-84 and was superseded by a type which, though identical tot he naked eye, was only .875 fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
