from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 11194
Colombia SB118-11194r.jpg

This specimen was lot 11194 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1778-SF 8 Escudos. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). Restrepo M73.22. AU Detail — Cleaned (PCGS). Good luster, with a bit of reflective flash on the reverse, and appealing orange toning around devices and peripheries. A few too many hairlines are visible on the obverse, but the overall look remains very attractive. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Hans M.F. Schulman's sale of the José da Costa Gomez Collection, March 1969, lot 369." This "standard bust" eight escudos, struck 1772-84, superseded the "rat nose" bust used at Bogota 1762-71. The Popayán mint also adopted the new bust, dropping the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI, used until 1771. The type marked a debasement from .917 fine to .901 fine gold.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 50.2, Fr-36, Restrepo M72.10.
