This specimen was lot 602 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 600 € (about $906 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,
"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1778. Popayán. SF. 4 escudos. Parte de brillo original. Escasa. (Four escudos of 1778, Popayán mint. Some luster, scarce.)"
This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) 1775-79 and Popayán 1773-83 and is much scarcer than the accompanying eight escudos.
