UBS sale 84, lot 2735

This specimen is lot 2735 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Carlos III. 1759-1788. 8 Escudos 1771, Nuevo Reino. Assayer VJ. Cuirassed bust to right, date below. Rev. Crowned arms surrounded by chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Rare. Slightly cleaned. Almost extremely fine." This "rat-nose" eight escudos, struck 1762-71, is an extremely rare type, even for Colombia, normally a prolific producer of gold. The Popayan mint used the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW, this specimen: 26.93 grams.
