Colombia SB818-40003r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40003 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1758-J Escudo. Popayán mint. Ferdinand VI (1746-1759). AU-53 (PCGS). The first milled Escudo issue of Popayán. Lovely light yellow gold with flashes of reflectivity and a good bit of surviving luster. The dies are bulged, limiting the crispness of central detail, but no major problems are seen. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." This specimen is one of a series struck 1756-59 at the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .917 fine gold, .098 troy oz ASW.
