This specimen was lot 20102 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $9,987.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 4000 Reis 1725-M, VF-XF, trace of mount removal at the top, very skillfully repaired. Extremely rare type from de Dobrao Series of the Minas Gerais Mint." This type was struck 1714-27 at Rio and Bahia with a few from Minas Gerais (shown here) 1724-27. Mintage of this denomination was suspended in 1727; when it resumed in 1749 it was at a lower weight of 8.07 g.
