The Braided Hair design first appeared on Half Cents in 1840, but the general public never saw them, as only Proofs were struck from 1840-1849. From 1849 to 1857, Half Cents were made in limited quantities, with the exception of the years 1851 and 1853 (yet, even then, their mintages are far below that of the more valuable 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent). The year 1852 presents a peculiar dilemma, as only Proofs were struck and there is some debate as to whether they were actually struck in 1852 and, if they were, which variety is considered "Original" (as opposed to a later Restrike). The Half Cent denomination ended in 1857, a victim of inflation and the high costs of producing the coin.
